Project description:
Kenya ranks 149th in the 179 developing countries worldwide. The country’s inhabitants suffer from poverty and diseases and have virtually no access to education, medical care or other public facilities. The situation in Lokichoggio in the north of the country is particularly precarious. Prolonged periods of drought, a high rate of illiteracy, virtually no infrastructure and many prevalent diseases add to the impossibility of developing the region.
The Turkana tribe led a nomadic existence for a long time and did not settle in Lokichoggio until several years ago. Relief was initially provided to the Turkana people in the form of food distribution during the periods of drought.
Quite a lot has been achieved in the meantime. A solar operated pump, which is connected to a 100 metre deep hole, pumps water into two 5,000 litre tanks and provides the residents with water.
Illiteracy is widespread among Turkana women, who are by no means self-sufficient and are consequently dependent on humanitarian aid. LIFE FOR ALL helps the women to become self-reliant. Further training courses are combined with microcredit programmes to teach the women how to earn their own living. LIFE FOR ALL has set up a women’s centre and a covered market. Conferences, workshops and training courses are held at the women’s centre. This is where the women can learn a new trade, such as jewellery making, cooking, spinning and knitting. They can also even attend courses in management, bookkeeping and administration. This equips them to start their own businesses.
The successful agricultural programme, adopted from our project country South Sudan, has trained 220 women since 2008. Our highly qualified staffs have taught them how to cultivate arable land, as well as to grow and store vegetables.
